Intersections: A Mosaic Project

A Community Art Collaboration Designed and Led by Public Artist Anne Krocak in Partnership with NAMI Carver County, Funded by the Minnesota State Arts Board

In the coming months, Carver County will witness the launch of a powerful and inclusive public art initiative: Intersections: A Mosaic Project.

This community-centered project — made possible by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, written by public artist Anne Krocak — will bring together individuals from all walks of life to create a large-scale mosaic that celebrates the beauty and complexity of our intersecting identities. In partnership with the Carver County branch of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), this project centers voices often underrepresented in public spaces: individuals living with mental health challenges, LGBTQ+ community members, disabled and neurodivergent individuals, BIPOC residents, trauma survivors, and anyone navigating the layered intersections of identity.

Anne Krocak, recognized for her trauma-informed and inclusive approach to community-based artmaking, envisioned this mosaic not only as a collaborative creative experience but also as a vehicle for healing, connection, and visibility. A series of free, accessible workshops will be held at Art, Heart, and Hoofbeats Sanctuary, where community members will be invited to explore and share their stories through handmade bas-relief tiles, stained glass, and mixed mosaic materials.

Workshop participants will reflect on questions such as:

  • What parts of your story are often unseen?

  • How do your identities intersect and shape who you are?

  • What makes you feel included — or excluded — in your community?

Together, participants will co-create a permanent public mosaic installation that raises every voice and affirms the power of belonging through shared expression.

Once complete, Intersections: A Mosaic Project will serve as a lasting symbol that Carver County is a community where all identities are valued and where art is a tool for inclusion, connection, and change. A permanent plaque will accompany the mosaic, honoring the community contributors, the partnership between NAMI Carver County and Anne Krocak, and the support of the Minnesota State Arts Board.

This project aims not only to create a beautiful and meaningful work of public art — but to spark lasting conversations, strengthen relationships, and provide a creative platform where all people feel seen, heard, and honored.
